ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:
Recap of the Year: Terry listed some of the KAA accomplishments of 2011, including: the selling of bricks from the old Junior High demolition; the Alumni Basketball Games held during the KHS American Cancer Society fundraising activities; the Dodge/Motor Inn Test Drive promotion which raised over $3,000; the annual Stadium Clean-Up before the 1st home game; and the presentation of 4 KAA Scholarships and the KAA endowed Scholarship. Terry noted that over $7,000 has been awarded in scholarships by the KAA and that the endowed scholarship has been renamed the ‘KAA Ken Locke Memorial SOS Scholarship’. Terry also stated that the KAA continues to support current KHS students by sponsoring an ad in the annual, supporting state qualifier teams by funding a meal, helping sponsor the Senior Picnic, and providing 5 years free membership to KHS graduates.

Special Events: Terry gave special recognition to the Class of 1961, who last year decided to extend a challenge to their classmates to raise $10,000 for an endowed scholarship through the Alumni Association. To date, over $17.000 has been raised by the Class of 1961. Phil Langstraat of the Class of 1961 said that they would like to continue the challenge to other KHS Classes, and that at least one other class is interested in extending the challenge to their classmates. Mike Ridnouer of the Class of 1961 donated 4 embroidered Panther Sweatshirts to the meeting. One sweatshirt was given to the oldest alumni present at the meeting: RG Wolf, Class of 1946; and one to the youngest alumni present: Anita Cole Brown, Class of 1986. The other two sweatshirts were sold as fundraisers for KAA.

Financial Report: A current report was not available as the treasurer, Chuck Reeves, was working with the Red Cross to provide disaster release on the East Coast.

SAVE OUR STADIUM:
Recap: Connie Husted reminisced about the ‘official’ beginning of Save Our Stadium at the Knoxville School Board Meeting in January of 2006. She commented on some of the major improvements over the last 6 years, including the addition of 200 seats and extensive renovation of the original seats on the Home side; the extensive renovation of the old concession stand, towers, and stairs; extensive renovation of the outside of the old bathhouse; landscaping outside the stadium; and the transformation of the old mulberry tree to the current carved Panther mascot.

As this is the end of Connie’s term on the KAA Board, she finished by stating that the last few years were truly a ‘labor of love’, and gave her a great appreciation of the alumni members.

Pennie Sommar, who is also ending her term on the KAA Board, stated she had no idea where they would be going when the SOS campaign began. SOS started out with the assistance of the State Historical Society, and with the help of many dedicated alumni raised money through fundraisers such as the Antique Appraisal, Home Interior parties, picking grapes, Homecoming dances, pop can redemption, Bryan Schlotterback’s marathon runs, and selling items such as SOS yard signs, videos, clothing, and items and memorabilia from the Old Junior High.

Pennie gave a visual presentation using a DVD prepared by Curt Schwanebeck of the restorations to date, including the seating repair, new seat caps, and drainage plus the addition of the 200 seats, repair and tuck pointing of the turrets currently used again for ticket sales; restoration of the poolhouse including replacing the spires and clock; construction of the Wall of Pride and this year erection of the monument for the Historical Plaque; replacement of the scoreboard and renovation of the old concession stand under the scoreboard; repair of the stairs at the SW corner of the stadium and addition of planters around the light poles.

Pennie stated even though the SOS committee is disbanded, the stadium fund will remain open to donations and memorial contributions for the continued maintenance of the stadium to assure that it remains on the Historical Registry.

SOS Financial Report: Connie reported that renovations in 2011 included the Visitor’s side at a cost of $40,180; the cement row along the bottom of the home side seating; $450 for landscaping; and approximately $6000 on the Historical Monument at the Southwest corner. Connie hoped that funds would continue to be contributed to SOS for future improvements such as an additional 200 seats; reconstruct the wall at the Northwest corner inside the stadium; and to maintain the current improvements.

The current SOS balance is $6,175 with a few bills still owed. The selling of bricks from the Old Junior High will contribute to the current balance.

Election of KAA Board: Terry asked for nominations from the floor to replace the board positions of Pennie Sommar, Connie Husted, and Terry Edwards. Nominees from the floor were Alonna Gass, Dennis Goad and Anita Brown. Terry asked for approval of all nominees by acclamation, which were approved by all present and carried. Terry introduced the formation of an Advisory Council to the KAA Board, which would also consist of 9 members from outside the Knoxville area who would not attend board meetings or have voting rights, but would give input to the board and ideas for projects. Ruby will be asking for volunteers through the KAA website.

Special Presentations: Terry noted that the largest fundraiser for SOS is the Pop Can and Bottle Redemptions, which to date as raised a total of $25,358.43 – an estimated 507,163 bottles and cans taken care of weekly by Bob Edwards. To show the appreciation of alumni members, Bob was presented with a “# 1 Can Man” plaque mounted on limestone from Ken Locke stadium and a lifetime membership.

Pat Kading was presented with a plaque mounted on stadium limestone in appreciation for all that she has done as a member of the board, her fundraising activities, and her unfailing enthusiasm for the project.

Curt Schwanebeck was presented with a brick on the Wall of Pride for all he has done for KAA.

Terry presented Pennie and Connie with Panther Paw necklaces for their leadership, and all their time and hard work over the last 5 years.

Pennie presented Terry with a plaque mounted on stadium limestone in appreciation for his leadership as President of the KAA the last 2 years.

Terry also thanked Ruby Dursky, unable to attend this meeting, for all her work on the KAA website, as well as taking pictures at SOS and KAA events.

Membership Drawing: All those who signed up for KAA memberships had their names placed in a drawing for a free lifetime membership. The name drawn was Mike Cunningham Sr.

Scholarship Award: The Class of 1966 had the most members present, so one of the 2012 KHS Scholarships will be named in their honor.

Closing: Terry asked if there was any further business and that the meeting be adjourned. Motion made by Thelma Reynolds, seconded by Marcia Jones and carried that the meeting be adjourned, and the KHS School Song was sung by all members.
