and the “Decades of Spirit” Scholarship from money raised by former KHS cheerleaders,
and presented through the KAA. Terry stressed the importance of membership and involvement
to the KAA organization.
Special Events: Pat Kading stated that 42 bricks have been added
to the Wall of Pride at the stadium for a total of 251 bricks. She also talked about
KAA participation in Living Windows; and the success of the Antique Road Show and
Celebration Iowa fundraisers. She spoke of the sale of the DVD’s highlighting KHS
events throughout the years and encouraged alumni to submit photos, old movies and
videos they may have of past KHS events. Sadly, Pat also submitted her resignation
from the board due to health issues.
Financial Report: Chuck Reeves reported that Elsie Kemp has agreed
to become the bookkeeper for KAA and is working on updating the reports. He reported
that the current KAA balance is $23, 253.68, but $6,167.00 of that amount will be
transferred to the Save Our Stadium account, which will leave a balance of $17,086.68.
Of that amount, $7,400.00 is being held for the Class of 1961 who are raising funds
for an endowed scholarship through KAA, leaving a final KAA balance of $9,686.68.
Election of KAA Board: Terry asked for nominations from the floor
to replace 3 board positions. Nominees were: Mike Dutton, Larry Rowley, and Candy
Jerkins. Terry asked for approval of all nominees by acclamation, which were approved
by all present and carried.
Class Challenge: Phil Langstraat, Class of 1961, welcomed classmates
Mike & Marilyn Ridnouer and Tom Kading. He said that his class wanted to leave a
legacy to the Knoxville community, and decided to extend a challenge to the class
to raise $10,000 for an endowed scholarship through the Alumni Association. $7,400
has been raised to date, and they hope to have raised the full amount by April of
2011. Phil said that other classes are welcome to contact him through the Alumni
website to ask about how to begin their own class challenge.
SAVE OUR STADIUM:
2010 Recap/Future Plans: Pennie gave a visual presentation using
a DVD prepared by Curt Schwanebeck of the restorations to date, including the seating
repair, new seat caps, and drainage plus the addition of 200 seats this year; repair
and tuck pointing of the turrets currently used again for ticket sales; restoration
of the poolhouse including replacing the spires and clock; construction of the Wall
of Pride; replacement of the scoreboard and renovation of the old concession stand
under the scoreboard; repair of the stairs at the SW corner of the stadium and addition
of planters around the light poles. Plans for next year, depending on funding, include
new fencing, erection of the monument for the Historical Plaque and a cornerstone;
and if possible, shoring up the retaining wall at the NW corner of the stadium.
Financial Report: Connie reported that the current balance of the
SOS fund, approximately $160,000, will all be needed for this year’s renovations.
Thus, additional fundraising will be needed for the fencing and seating project
for next year, and if possible, replacing the retaining wall at the NW corner of
the stadium. Pennie stated also that even when the SOS committee is disbanded, the
stadium fund will remain open to donations and memorial contributions for the continued
maintenance of the stadium to assure that it remains on the Historical Registry.
Special Presentation: Terry presented Ruby Dursky, Class of 1965,
with a Lifetime Membership to KAA to thank her for all her work on the KAA website,
as well as taking pictures at SOS and KAA events.
Closing: Meeting was adjourned by Terry, and the KHS School Song
was sung by all members.
