Meeting Minutes for June 9, 2010

Pennie Sommar called the meeting to order on June 9, 2010 at Swamp Fox.

Knoxville Alumni Association Board Meeting Summary: Lacy Stevenson and Tyler Walters were presented with Donor Wall Bricks as a thank you for their service as KHS student liaisons.

KAA presented the Boys KHS Soccer Team with $300 for meal expenses before their trip to State on June 3. Terry made the presentation to Coach John Smith before the team bus left that morning.

Phil Langstraat presented Pennie with more checks from the challenge issued to his Class of 1961, for a total raised to date of $6,400. They hope to raise $10,000 for an endowment scholarship presented through Dollars for Scholars.

Treasurer’s Report: Current SOS balance: $153,086.79.

Approximately $5820 will also be transferred from the KAA account to the SOS account.

$411 was collected from pop can redemptions for the month of May.

Pennie announced that Elsie Kemp has volunteered to accept the position of bookkeeper for the Alumni Association and SOS. Chuck Reeves will continue to serve as Treasurer on the board.

Stadium Update: The architect plans for the additional 400 seats will be scheduled for the agenda at the June 14 School Board meeting. The deadline for bids to be submitted is June 30, and will be on the July 12 agenda for approval. TK Concrete will begin to replace the mismatched seats in the stadium around July 1.

The replacement clock on the outside of the bathhouse has been ordered at a cost of $138.69. The Marion County Foundation Grant will be used to help with most of the cost for a historical plaque and pole to be placed at the SW corner of the stadium. It is hoped that the same company that made the brass logos on the donor walls can make the plaque.

The cost for a 12” X 12” X 24” time capsule would be $635. It had been suggested that a date be set for the opening of the capsule, possibly on the 100th anniversary of the stadium in 2038.

Pennie said that Randy Wilson had commented that it would be an excellent addition to the outside of the stadium if the 3 other poles along Robinson Street were landscaped like the pole at the SW corner. Bob Edwards talked to Creative Landscaping, who said that the cost for this project would be about $1800.

The Stadium Clean-Up is scheduled for August 25, and Pat said that it is on the KHS football Facebook.

Fundraising: Mentor Study Club presented SOS with a $100 donation.

$620 was donated to SOS from the Lena Bankus memorial, and $1535 from the Jerry Zager memorial.

Pat said that the menu for the dinner before the Celebration Iowa event on July 19 will be ham balls, baked beans, baked potatoes and dessert. Volunteers will be needed to help prepare the ham balls in late June or early July. Beta Sigma Phi sorority members will provide the desserts.

Tickets are currently on sale at the local banks and The Next Chapter.

Pennie asked if there was any further business. There was none. The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held on July 14, 2010 at 6:30 PM at
Swamp Fox.
